Patient Insights Diversity Position Paper

The importance of diverse representation in clinical research is frequently discussed. As recently reported by the United States Office of the Inspector General, enrollment of underrepresented groups in NIH funded studies fell short of stated goals.* Current initiatives are focused on racial and ethnic backgrounds, the inclusion of older adults, and what has been traditionally referred to as “inclusion of women.” In this position paper, we outline diversity using far broader domains. The goal of any program or initiative to improve diversity within clinical trials must ensure the needs of all populations will be served to demonstrate we are “going beyond to improve lives everywhere.”
