The Program:
At Medidata, interns will have the opportunity to accelerate their careers by working closely with experienced professionals and gain valuable, hands-on, full-time work experience. By being a part of our global organization, interns have the opportunity to work alongside our talented and committed professionals helping them to build a strong foundation for achieving their career goals. For 12 weeks, beginning May 18, 2026, interns will have an opportunity to gain a deep understanding of what it means to be a Medidatian. United around a single goal of empowering smarter treatments and healthier people. Medidatians work in a culture of curiosity, innovation and fun. You will be contributing to the line of business with sustainable and meaningful work.

Our Summer Internship program also includes instructor led training, guided mentorship, exposure to senior leadership and community service. In addition to individual and specific related responsibilities, each intern will participate in our Intern Innovation Lab. Assigned to cross-functional teams, interns will work closely to develop an innovative solution to a business problem currently facing Medidata. As they work diligently to present their final solutions to a panel of top Medidata leaders, we are confident that our interns will make a significant impact on our business.

About the Team:
The CTMS Nexus team builds the next-generation data engineering foundation that powers Medidata's Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS). Nexus enables near real-time clinical trial operational data by building scalable data pipelines, modern data products, and analytics-ready datasets that support study execution, operational monitoring, and reporting across global clinical trials.

Candidate's Profile:

As a Software Engineering Intern in Study Experience, you will work alongside experienced engineers to build data engineering solutions that move and transform clinical trial data at scale. You will gain hands-on experience working with modern cloud data platforms, event-driven architectures, and AI-assisted software development tools such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code to accelerate development and improve code quality.

This role provides exposure to real-world engineering challenges in healthcare technology while contributing to systems that help pharmaceutical companies bring therapies to patients faster.

SMART Goals for the Role:

Goal 1: Build and enhance data engineering components Within the internship period, the intern will contribute to at least one production-aligned data pipeline component or data transformation module (for example CDC ingestion, staging transformations, or API integrations) that processes clinical trial operational data.

Goal 2: Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, Use AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code to assist in writing, testing, and documenting code while following Medidata engineering best practices. Demonstrate measurable productivity improvements through code commits, test coverage, and documentation contributions.

Goal 3: Deliver a technical prototype or improvement project Design and implement a small prototype or enhancement that improves developer efficiency, data pipeline automation, or observability within the Nexus ecosystem, and present the results to the engineering team and leadership at the end of the internship.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and test software components that support clinical trial data pipelines and internal data products.

  • Work with engineers to build and enhance data ingestion pipelines that process data from various sources into analytics-ready datasets.

  • Assist in developing data transformations, APIs, and automation scripts supporting CTMS operational data workflows.

  • Use AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code to accelerate development, generate code suggestions, and improve

    documentation.

  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following Medidata engineering standards and development practices.

  • Participate in code reviews, team standups, and engineering design discussions.

  • Collaborate with data engineers, architects, and product teams to understand requirements and implement solutions.

  • Contribute to technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and developer guides.

  • Support internal engineering tooling or automation initiatives that improve pipeline reliability, observability, or development efficiency.

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one language such as Python, Java, or similar.
  • Understanding of software engineering fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and system design basics.
  • Familiarity with SQL and relational databases.
  • Interest in cloud platforms, data engineering, or distributed systems.
  • Curiosity about AI-assisted development tools and willingness to experiment with tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar coding assistants.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to learn quickly in a collaborative environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with data processing tools, ETL pipelines, or data analytics frameworks.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS.
  • Exposure to modern data stack technologies such as Snowflake, Kafka, Airflow, or similar systems.
  • Experience with version control tools such as Git.
  • Interest in healthcare, life sciences, or clinical trial technologies.

The salary range posted below refers only to positions that will be physically based in New York. As with all roles, Medidata sets ranges based on a number of factors including function, level, candidate expertise and experience, and geographic location. Pay ranges for candidates in locations other than New York, may differ based on the local market data in that region. The base hourly pay range for this position is $32 an hour.
