Our Software Engineering function is run out of London, New York, San Francisco & Tokyo. Working in a fully Agile environment, it is a high-performing team that builds industry-leading platforms and systems on today’s leading technologies, frameworks and platforms.

You will work on Medidata’s next generation of SaaS-based clinical trial management applications, deployed on AWS and you will play a lead role in developing our new platform. Our philosophy here is that if you demonstrate the right team focus and proactive attitude, on the back of a solid foundation in application engineering, we will train and invest in you to develop your experience in our platform technologies.

Medidata’s R&D Team, which includes Cloud Engineering, Information Systems Security, Data Fabric and Mobile, builds platform infrastructure and advanced products to help companies bring new treatments to market. We are making amazing strides towards how new medicines are identified and developed by our clients (BioTechs and Pharmaceuticals for example) via Machine Learning, AI and other cutting-edge technologies.

You will be joining our Medidata Rave CTMS team:  https://www.medidata.com/en/products/ctms.  The platform provides efficient monitoring of clinical studies with integrated workflows.  It improves the Contract Research Associate experience, aids proactive decision making, and reduces risk and costs, to increase study performance, patient safety, and time to market for the drug/device.  Put another way, it’s saving lives.

As a leader you will:

• You will be responsible for leading multiple engineering teams (3-5 teams) spread globally
• Keep your team unified, motivated and connected to the goals of the organization
• Continuously improve your team's effectiveness
• Directly manage and develop your team's engineers and testers
• Recruit and retain talented engineers
• Continuously increase the bar of engineering excellence and product quality
• Collaborate closely with test, project and product managers to plan and deliver product vision
• Proactively anticipate challenges and obstacles
• Handle ambiguities and drive timely decision making

As a technical expert you will:

• Be a hands-on contributor involved directly in the work of your team
• Lead your teams to turn the technical vision into reality by engaging with architects and other teams
• Maintain good awareness of software engineering best practices
• Design, build, and maintain large consumer or enterprise-facing web-based applications
• Have strong analytical and communication skills

Essential competencies for you to be successful in this job:

• Experience designing and developing with microservices and event driven architectural patterns.
• Experience designing and developing with web API patterns and protocol like REST, GraphQL
• Experience with web and services application security
• Experience with designing, developing and deploying applications and services in AWS
• Experience designing, developing with serverless technologies like AWS lambda
• Experience with TDD and BDD (Mocha, Chai, Cucumber)
• Good knowledge of CI/CD pipelines using tools like Travis CI, Cloudformation, Terraform and Ansible. Experience with containers and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with application observability and distributed tracing.
• Knowledge of Java/Scala for the back end development; React/Other for the front end frameworks

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s, Master’s or PHD degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
