About the Team:
Lead and shape a world-class Cloud Engineering function that designs, implements, and operates both private (on-premises and hosted) and public cloud (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) infrastructure. You'll drive cloud strategy, architecture, automation, security, and operations across all platforms, reporting directly to the SVP, Head of R&D Operations.
As VP – Head of Cloud Engineering, you'll drive the organization's cloud transformation, enabling innovation, agility, and cost-effective, secure operations across all cloud environments. This role is vital in modernizing infrastructure and shaping future-facing technology capabilities.
Success in this role will look like:
- Getting our hybrid cloud platform fully operational, making sure it's always on and cost efficient.
- Setting up a solid Cloud Center of Excellence with clear rules for security, compliance, and how we deploy stuff.
- Seeing real improvements in cloud costs, performance, how fast we deploy, and how reliable everything is.
- Building an awesome engineering team that’s empowered to deliver business value through cloud innovations.
Responsibilities:
- Define and execute a global cloud engineering strategy aligned with business goals.
- Serve as the senior authority in selecting cloud services based on technical, financial, and compliance criteria.
- Collaborate with architects, product, security, and development teams to ensure cohesive integration across cloud environments.
- Direct the architecture, deployment, migration, and lifecycle management of enterprise-wide cloud solutions (Azure, AWS, GCP) and private cloud platforms (VMware, SAN, on-prem).
- Ensure scalable, resilient, secure, and cost-effective designs using infrastructure-as-code, containerization, hybrid connectivity, and automation.
- Build, develop, mentor, and manage a multi-tiered cloud engineering team (Senior/Mid/Junior Engineers, Cloud Architects).
- Promote best practices in CI/CD, DevOps, site reliability, and cloud-native engineering principles.
- Foster continuous learning and collaboration on emerging technologies.
- Oversee cloud systems monitoring, SLAs, incident response, and Tier 3 support across environments.
- Serve as an escalation point for complex technical issues and design ongoing optimizations and scalability improvements.
- Implement cloud governance models including security hardening, identity and access management, compliance (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA), and cost-control mechanisms.
- Establish consistent change control, risk assessment, and audit processes across cloud teams.
- Manage relationships with cloud and hosting providers, negotiating contracts for services, licensing, and support.
- Lead budget planning, cloud cost forecasting, and cost optimization.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 12+ years of infrastructure and cloud engineering experience, including leadership roles.
- Proven capability designing and managing private and public clouds at scale.
Technical Proficiency
- Deep expertise in Azure, AWS, GCP; certifications like Azure Architect, AWS Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Professional Architect preferred.
- Demonstrable knowledge of VMware, SAN, SAN/NAS, fibre channel, virtualization, and private cloud operations.
- Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, ARM, CloudFormation), scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python), container platforms (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
Leadership & Soft Skills
- Exceptional strategic thinker and communicator capable of leading diverse, geographically distributed teams.
- Strong decision-making capabilities balancing business objectives, security, reliability, and cost.
- Mentorship-focused, enabling growth across engineering teams.
- Experience establishing cloud security and governance frameworks, including identity, cost, and access management.
- Familiarity with compliance regimes relevant to regulated industries such as judicial, healthcare, or finance.
- Prior exposure to AI/ML infrastructure, data engineering workloads, or hybrid work environments.
The salary range posted below refers only to positions that will be physically based in New York City. As with all roles, Medidata sets ranges based on a number of factors including function, level, candidate expertise and experience, and geographic location. Pay ranges for candidates in locations other than New York, may differ based on the local market data in that region.
The base salary range for this position located physically in New York city/ New Jersey is $216,000-$288,000.
Base pay is one part of the Total Rewards that Medidata provides to compensate and recognize employees for their work. Most sales positions are eligible for a commission on the terms of applicable plan documents, and many of Medidata's non-sales positions are eligible for annual bonuses.
