Episode Transcript: What Is a Patient Equation?

In our sixth episode “What Is a Patient Equation?” we talk with Glen de Vries, co-founder and co-CEO of Medidata Solutions and the author of the upcoming book, The Patient Equation: The Precision Medicine Revolution in the Age of COVID-19 and Beyond. We learn about the critical errors in perspective that pervade clinical practice, the fundamental shifts in the way the global healthcare system thinks about treatment development, and how the patient equation can ensure a pandemic of such proportions will never happen again.

Through unprecedented feats of unity among technology, regulatory, and healthcare sectors and the implementation of carefully calculated plans of action, many nations have learned to contain the virus or coexist with it. Strict quarantine protocols set by governments worldwide have also helped curb the spread of COVID-19.

But these measurements only serve to bide time for a cure that hasn’t yet surfaced. Caution is exercised even in regions that have managed to reduce cases, and still other countries continue to suffer from the effects of the virus.

As the number of afflicted individuals rises without pause, so does cause for alarm. Susceptibility to the virus does not seem to be limited to certain vulnerable populations as we once believed. Where did we go wrong? How truly vulnerable are we? How can we overcome these flaws and sustain best practices—even after the pandemic ends?

Join us at Clinical Minds, a podcast about clinical development. Our goal is to share what’s happening in the world of clinical research today, the technology and ideas that are transforming it, and why this matters for patients, which is all of us.
