Medidata Solutions Vice President Lori Shields Honored in PharmaVOICE 100

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Clinical Trial Planning Expert Recognized for Innovation, Creativity and Inspirational Leadership

NEW YORK, N.Y. – August 3, 2009 – Medidata Solutions (NASDAQ: MDSO), a leading global provider of hosted clinical development solutions, today announced that Lori Shields, Vice President, Operations, Trial Planning has been named one of the 100 most inspiring people in the life sciences industry by PharmaVOICE magazine.

Leading executives from across the life sciences industry were nominated for this year’s PharmaVOICE top 100 most inspirational people. A panel of PharmaVOICE editors chose the winners based on their ability to inspire, motivate and influence corporate leadership, research and development, technology, creativity and marketing and strategy.

Shields manages the client relations, data acquisition and quality assurance teams that fuel Medidata’s innovative group of trial planning products. By encouraging the flow of new ideas that lead to product development and improvement, she has been involved with more than 100 improvements to Medidata Grants Manager™ and a range of protocol design, budget and site negotiation tools. Shields’ novel contributions include a new, more accurate method for sponsors to calculate the complexity of a study, which allows sponsors to maintain more equitable site relationships and increase the overall effectiveness of clinical trials.

“Lori’s understanding of the challenges faced by sponsors and clinical researchers, combined with her extensive knowledge of trial operations built through years of innumerable consultative engagements with sponsors, has enabled her to manage and continually enhance one of the largest investigator cost assessment databases in the world,” said Glen de Vries, President of Medidata Solutions. “Her current work creating new types of value for both sponsors and sites by combining investigator grant data with protocol design metrics and developing novel insights into what makes clinical trials operationally fail or succeed is invaluable to the industry.”

With this honor, Shields becomes the fifth Medidata executive to be recognized with the PharmaVOICE 100 award, alongside Medidata’s co-founders Tarek Sherif, Glen de Vries and Dr. Edward Ikeguchi and Senior Vice President, Development Keith Howells.

“Lori’s expertise in database management and dedication to the needs and goals of clinical trial sponsors around the world has enabled her to evolve into an inspirational leader,” said Taren Grom, Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder of PharmaVOICE. “We are honored to recognize Lori as part of the 100 innovative individuals within the life sciences industry.”
